Forty Thieves is a solitaire game played with two decks of cards where your goal is to build up eight foundation piles sorted by suit.

Quick Reference Guide

The aim is to move all cards to the eight foundation piles at the top.

The foundations are built up by suit from ace to king.

The columns on the tableau are built down by suit.

Only one card can be moved at a time.

The top card of each column may be moved.

Any available card can be moved to an empty space.

The game is won when all the cards have been moved to the foundations.

Rules

The Forty Thieves tableau consists of ten columns dealt four face-up cards each. Only the last card of a column is available for play.

You can move cards one at a time, building up in suit on the foundations. Move any available Aces to the foundation building each foundation up in the same suit to King.

Build down in suit on the tableau, for example the 8 of hearts can go onto the 9 of hearts. Unlike Klondike where you can move a group of cards, only single cards may be moved in Forty Thieves solitaire.

When you run out of moves, deal one card from the stock to the waste pile, continuing until the stock is empty.

Continue building until all cards are in the foundation piles. You win when all cards have been placed in the foundations.

Layout

The layout of the cards in forty thieves solitaire involves four areas:

Tableau: The tableau is the main area of gameplay with 40 cards laid out in 10 columns with 4 cards each. All cards are turned face up.

Stock: The 64 cards that are left after setting up the tableau are placed face-down in the stock.

Waste: Any card you draw from the stock is moved face-up onto the waste pile.

Foundations: Your goal is to play all cards to the eight foundations. Build them by suit, starting with the Ace and ending with the King.

Tips for Winning Forty Thieves Solitaire

Aces and twos can be moved to the foundation immediately to free up space in the tableau.

Focus on moves that make low cards available on the tableau first so they are ready to be moved onto the foundations.

Empty columns create space to allow you to move any available card helping you maneuver them around the tableau to reach hidden cards or create sequences you need.

Plan ahead. The cards on the tableau are face-up so you can strategically plan how to create sequences or free up blocked cards.

Use the undo feature in this online game of forty thieves to help you learn the optimal strategy and correct mistakes without starting over.
